“For the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). Just as wages are due to a worker when he has finished his work, death is the ‘payment’ we get for our sin. “Death is the wages of the least sin”, says Matthew Henry.
Because our sin is inherited, we cannot redeem ourselves. Only someone who does not carry this ‘inheritance’ in their being, someone who is free from impurities, therefore, someone who is holy and without sin, or the guilt of sin, can take it upon Himself to pay the debt we owe to God.
“He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21).
The gift of God is eternal life and this gift is only through Jesus Christ our Lord.
