Opinion: In Bible Prophecy 101 chapter 3 “Doctrines That Divide Christians” (here) I wrote this:
Replacement Theology may be either Amillennial or Postmillennial. It is currently the most widely held belief in Catholic teaching as well as the World Council of Churches, the Presbyterian Church USA, the Methodist Church, the Lutheran Church (ELCA), the Anglican Church and the United Church of Christ.
The WCC organization’s members include denominations which claim to collectively represent some 590 million people across the world in about 150 countries, including 520,000 local congregations served by 493,000 pastors and priests, in addition to elders, teachers, members of parish councils and others.
The combined Catholic and WCC churches represent some 1.8 billion self-described Christians.
Replacement Theology teaches that God changed His mind about the Jew, and that the church is the beneficiary of God’s covenant with Abraham.
Revelation 17:1-2: “One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the punishment of the great prostitute, who sits on many waters. With her the kings of the earth committed adultery and the inhabitants of the earth were intoxicated with the wine of her adulteries.”
The scene is late in the great tribulation. The prostitute symbolizes a false religious system that began in Revelation 13:1-2, and the waters represent multitudes of people, nations and languages. The angel informs John that the kings of the earth had committed adultery with the false religion and God is now ready to administer judgment against it.
Revelation 17:3-5 “So he carried me away in the Spirit into the wilderness. And I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast which was full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the filthiness of her fornication. And on her forehead a name was written:
MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT,
THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS
AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS
OF THE EARTH.”
The beast, Antichrist’s world government, is at first dominated by the woman (false religious system), and for a time will appear to be in league with each other.
Antichrist, like Roman Emperors before him, will have a religious leader (Pontifex Maximus Latin, literally: “greatest pontiff”), to enforce worship of himself.
The woman dressed in purple, scarlet and gold (similar to ritualistic churches today), being the rider, will actually be the dominant partner at first. But Revelation 17:16 records that the anti-Christ and his government will actually hate the woman, and acting on God’s orders will destroy her.
For all those skeptical of the end of the age, the Church of Laodicea (Revelation 3:14-22), is upon us.
