The Last Supper by Nicolas Poussin

Holy Thursday, also known as Maundy Thursday, is the Thursday before Easter. “Maundy” comes from the Latin word mandatum, which means “mandate” or “commandment”.

“A new commandment I give you, that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.” John 13:34.

In an upper room, Jesus prepared both Himself and His disciples for His death. He gave the Passover meal a new meaning. The bread and wine now represented His body soon to be sacrificed and His blood soon to be shed.

Afterwards, they sang a hymn and went to the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus prayed in agony, knowing what lay ahead of Him.
