Our son had his first baby, a son, born Thursday afternoon. The wonder and fascination upon looking at a newborn baby is humbling and at the same time can make us feel self-congratulatory.
We cannot forget, however, who came first in the order of creation. God was there eternally before we were, and it is Him we thank for this child as we know all life comes from God!
We remember that God has entrusted to us not only the responsibility of procreation and family but of teaching the next generation the knowledge and love of God, the gospel of Jesus Christ, and stewardship of His creation.
Moses, by instruction from God, spoke these words to the people of Israel regarding the training of children:
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.” (Deut. 6:4-9)
To God be the glory!
