Christians ‘in the Way’ of China’s Totalitarian Rule

CBN: It was 40 years ago this week that China opened its doors to the world and launched a series of ambitious reforms that would create one of the world’s largest economic engines.

“China is now the world’s second largest economy, the biggest manufacturer, top trader of goods, and the second largest consumer of goods and recipient of foreign investment,” Chinese President Xi Jinping said during a speech in Beijing celebrating the 40th anniversary of the landmark reforms.

“December 18, 1978, was an important day to be remembered in the history of the Chinese nation,” Xi added, saying that it marked the “start of a great journey of reform, opening-up and socialist modernization.”

But unlike Deng Xiaoping, who helped launch the country’s reforms 40 years ago and wanted to reduce the power and influence of the Communist Party over civil society, China’s current leader believes in the absolute power of the Party and wants his government to exert control over every aspect of Chinese life.

Opinion: Like all dictators, Xi Jinping has no tolerance for religion. Xi is cracking down on human rights, religious freedom, and freedom of expression.

  • The Chinese government now selects Catholic Bishops
  • Bibles are being confiscated and churches destroyed
  • Jews are restricted from celebrating Levitical observances
  • Muslims are being placed in detention camps

The Chinese government is trying to get strict control over some 30 + million known Christians, although some international Christian organizations estimate there are tens of millions more in underground churches.

What Xi does’t know is that Christianity thrives in such persecution:

” …At that time a great persecution arose against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him.As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering every house, and dragging off men and women, committing them to prison.

Therefore those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word. Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them. And the multitudes with one accord heeded the things spoken by Philip, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. For unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed; and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed. And there was great joy in that city.” Acts 8:1-8

How prophetic then that Christianity is the fastest growing religion in China.
