IBD Op-Ed: “Mere months after easing restrictions on Cuba, the U.S. is now reaping its inevitable reward: We send them tourists with millions of dollars, and Cuba sends us poverty-stricken refugees. Some deal.
A new report says that at least 7,000 Cuban “refugees” are expected to reach the Texas border in coming days. Virtually all of them are arriving from Central America, where they have been welcomed with less than open arms by governments that want nothing to do with a refugee crisis. The U.S. still has favorable immigration laws for Cubans, so they’re coming before the law changes — which it almost certainly will.
Last year, 43,000 Cubans entered the U.S., nearly doubling the 24,000 of a year earlier. As recently as 2011, a mere 7,000 or so entered.”
Opinion: The announcement came on December 18, 2014:
Zero Hedge: “Mr. Obama has instructed Secretary of State John Kerry to immediately initiate discussions with Cuba about reestablishing diplomatic relations and to begin the process of removing Cuba from the list of states that sponsor terrorism, which it has been on since 1982, the White House said.”
In his State of the Union speech on January 15, 2015 President Obama told Congress “It’s the right thing to do.”
Our opinion piece that day: “Whenever the president says “It’s the right thing to do” remember to duck.”
My wife was born in Cuba, her family, under threats of arrest, was forced to leave the island. To her, since the same murderous dictatorship is still in charge, all the sacrifices her family and countless other families made were in vain.
Now, a second Mariel is under way thanks to progressive-left world leaders Barack Obama and Pope Francis, as the demonic Castro brothers rid themselves of their unwanted citizens and grow richer with the flood of US investment.
And thanks to the Cuban Adjustment Act of 1966, all that the refugees have to do is arrive here (on dry land). The law is so loose that anyone claiming even a single parent born in Cuba can gain legal residency.
After almost 60 years of communist rule, the murderous Castro regime has pulled off the deal of the century.
BTW, you would think that no one would want to leave the island now that US relations are finally active and every day we hear about the fantastic opportunities that are becoming available on the island. Do you think the average Cuban national knows something we don’t know? Yes – they know that the Castros cannot be trusted and making any agreements with their government will be a treacherous, uncertain, one-sided arrangement that will only benefit them, not the Cuban people.
“Che” would be so proud.
