Eternal Security and Gospel Assurance

Did you know over half of professing Christianity denies or rejects the Gospel’s divine promise of eternal life? Our Lord Jesus made His gracious and unbreakable promise very clear: “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life” (John 5:24). The apostle John wrote an entire epistle to show believers that we can know that we have eternal life (1 John 5:13). True saving faith is the assurance of things hoped for, and our greatest hope is eternal, everlasting life with our Savior (Heb. 11:1). Yet, Satan wants to rob Christians of their joy, peace, freedom and confidence in Christ. He persuades people to believe the lies of false teachers, rather than trust the power and promises of God found in His inspired Word. Believers are eternally secure because of God’s omnipotent power and unbreakable promises.

Power of Almighty God

Everyone who has been born again to a living hope is protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time (1 Peter 1:3-5). Not only are all believers protected by the omnipotent power of God, but their inheritance is imperishable, undefiled and reserved in heaven.

Promises of Our Great God and Savior
Our Lord Jesus promised, “All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out” (John 6:37). Our Savior’s unbreakable promise is confirmed by God’s will. “For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day” (John 6:40).
Perpetual Intercession of Jesus
Our Lord Jesus “is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them” (Heb. 7:25).
Proof of Christ’s Unconditional Love
Paul wrote: “Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 8:35, 37-39).
Protection of the Good Shepherd

The Good Shepherd described His protection this way: ““My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand” (John 10:27-28). Jesus “is able to keep you from falling and to present you before His glorious presence without fault and with great joy” (Jude 1:24). Our eternal destiny is assured because the Good Shepherd keeps us and protects us.

Permanence of Divine Gifts

The inspired Word of God assures us that the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable (Rom. 11:29). God will never take back His gracious, indescribable gift of salvation (Eph. 2:8-9).

Plain Meaning of the Word “Eternal”

Throughout the Bible, the word “eternal” is used to describe many things that are everlasting and never-ending. Everyone who believes the eternal Gospel is promised eternal redemption through the eternal Spirit, who guarantees our eternal inheritance (Heb. 9:12; Eph. 1:14). Our eternal God’s eternal purpose promises eternal life and eternal glory to His children in His eternal kingdom (Rev. 14:6; Rom. 16:26; 1 John 5:13; 1 Pet. 5:10; 2 Pet.1:11). Those who deny or reject God’s promise of eternal life need to reconsider what the word “eternal” means. They will have to answer these rhetorical questions:

  • How can one who has been made complete in Christ become incomplete? (Col. 2:10)
  • How can one who has been born again of incorruptible seed die again? (1 Pet. 1:23)
  • How can one who is kept by the power of God ever fall away? (1 Pet. 1:5)
  • How can one who has been perfected forever be found imperfect? (Heb. 10:14)
  • How could God break His promise to glorify everyone He justifies? (Rom. 8:30)
  • How can the Good Shepherd fail to protect and keep His sheep? (John 10:1-30)
  • How can the proof of God’s unconditional love be invalidated? (Rom. 8:31-39)
  • The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the greatest news anyone could ever hear because it offers the greatest gift anyone could ever receive! Let us proclaim it faithfully, completely, and passionately for the glory of Christ and the salvation of those who are perishing. Pope Benedict’s Passing into Eternity
The death of Pope Benedict has given Christians a tremendous opportunity to proclaim and protect the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. As the pope’s church, once again, becomes the world’s stage, we must defend the truth of God’s Word. All eyes were focused on the St. Peter’s Basilica, the very church that was financed with the filthy lucre obtained from the sale of God’s forgiveness through indulgences. Catholic Cardinals and Bishops will cast a spell over a global TV audience with the splendor of their rituals and the pomp and pageantry of their pagan traditions.
Tragically, many evangelicals have already heaped undue praise and honor on Pope Benedict, who deceived over a billion Catholics with a false and fatal Gospel. He never claimed to be God, but he took pleasure in being addressed with titles reserved for God alone, including Holy Father, Head of the Church, and Vicar of Christ. While we mourn for anyone who dies apart from Christ, we thank God for this opportunity to engage Catholics with the eternal truths of the Gospel. Let us plead with them to trust the inspired Word of God, instead of the uninspired words of popes and bishops.

Letters to Edify and Encourage the Saints
Hey Mike, We are overjoyed that the Lord is using our church to make the message you taught here go viral with over 391,000 views on YouTube! People from around the world have contacted us because of your message. They have started watching our sermons and tell us how they are being equipped. Still, others attack and slander us. The minor attacks we have received have opened our eyes to how much you must get attacked by the enemy, which has encouraged us to pray for you more. We thank God for you and Jane, and we pray that our Lord will strengthen and protect you from the evil one! Your brother, student and friend, R.D., San Juan Capistrano, CA
Mike, You are a man who reeks of ego as one who has been influenced by the evil one, not God. If you want to know why so many non-believers despise Christianity, look at yourself in the mirror. It is the Bible-beating, self-righteous folks like yourself who have driven people away from God and Christianity by condemning others. The bottom line here is that your hate for Catholics guides your thinking and is a mortal sin. You fail to realize that the Scriptures you like to twist are those you never would have known without the Catholic Church. If you truly were once Catholic, you would be wise to return. The devil was likely behind the Protestant reformation. Despite the filth and corruption that has infiltrated the Catholic Church, the Sacraments are the work of Jesus Christ. As the Blessed mother once said in an apparition, you should never condemn the faith of another. You have never heard a Catholic respond in the manner and depth I responded to you, because very few people in the world have the depth of study, travel and experience that I have, including you. R.D., Internet
Hi R.D., Thank you for your response to my message on YouTube and the opportunity to challenge you in your faith. Please know that I love the Catholic people and have dedicated my life to reaching them with the Gospel. However, I hate the religion that deceives its people with a false and fatal gospel. There is nothing more evil and wicked than a religion which points its people to the broad road that leads to eternal destruction. That is why the apostle Paul issued a divine curse on anyone who distorts the Gospel of salvation (Gal. 1:6-9). You would be wise to test every spirit and every man’s teaching with the inspired Word of God (Acts 17:11; 1 John 4:1). Scriptures were given to us by God to reprove and correct error because evil men and imposters will proceed from bad to worse deceiving and being deceived (2 Tim. 3:13, 15).
I watched your message on the Twisted Teachings of the Catholic Church and your intent is commendable. In my early 20s, I considered becoming a Catholic priest and observed that you made many mistakes in describing Roman Catholicism. I am now an Ordained Anglican Minister and have a Doctorate in Biblical Studies. Someone like me could chew you up and spit you out when they know both Roman theology – which you have misrepresented – and the Bible, which you have misinterpreted. You must not know that every aspect of Roman teaching is based on Scripture. It also comes across as very disrespectful, implying the Roman Church pulled these Doctrines and practices out of thin air. I have known several Priests that would have totally destroyed you. Your total disrespect for the faith of 1.4 billion is beyond the pale. J.D., Internet
Hi J.D., You said, “every aspect of Roman teaching is based on Scripture.” Please prove your point or humbly admit that you made a fallacious statement that calls into question your doctorate in biblical studies. Where do you find in Scripture the infallible dogmas of Mary’s perpetual virginity, immaculate conception, sinless life and bodily assumption into heaven? Please also consider that your sacerdotal priesthood is unnecessary and spurious because the Lord Jesus finished His perfect, all-sufficient work of redemption and now intercedes as the only High Priest believers need.
Hi Mike, Thanks for the inspiration you’ve been to me and so many others. Your book, Contending for the Gospel, really opened my eyes to what’s going on today in so many churches. D.W., Grand Rapids, MI
Mike, Funny how you’ve based a large part of your anti-Catholic message on the supposed error of Catholic teaching on works when James 2:24 states: “You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone.” Soon you will stand before God to give account for rejecting the Church that Christ Himself founded. I truly hope you stop your disobedience and return to the Catholic faith. D.H., Internet
Hi D.H., You must consider the context of James chapter 2, verses 14 to 26. James is not teaching us how to be justified. He is describing two kinds of faith. He is contrasting a living, genuine faith that produces works with a dead, spurious faith that is void of works. Faith is the root and works are the fruit. Only living faith produces fruit. It is faith alone that justifies, but a faith that justifies is never alone. When James says, “show me your faith”, he is asking for evidence of their new life in Christ (Jas. 2:18). Since faith is invisible, it cannot be seen by other men. That is why James said: “I will show you my faith by my works” (Jas. 2:18).
Let us glorify our Lord Jesus Christ by faithfully sharing His glorious Gospel of grace!
