Settlements law spells trouble for Jordan

JPost: The Settlement Regulation Law passed on Monday night leaves Jordan in the lurch, poses a fresh challenge to the stability of the troubled kingdom and puts more pressure on the Jordanian-Israeli peace treaty.

With the majority of its population of Palestinian origin and with the kingdom’s legitimacy bound up with its role – recognized by Israel – as protector of the holy sites in Jerusalem, Jordan has a greater stake than any other country in a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Passage of the law is clear proof in Jordanian eyes that Israel is not interested in such a solution. more …

Opinion: In 1924 Jordan was created for Arabs, including those living in Israel. This was the original two-state solution.

Today, the majority of Jordan’s population is of “Palestinian” origin, due to the fact that many of the Arab/Egyptian peoples in the newly created state of Israel moved to Jordan to flee the coming War of Independence on May 15, 1948.

Daoud Kuttab, a columnist for the Jordan Times laments: “Clearly now there is no concept of land for peaceWithout even the illusion of a possible two-state solution remaining, King Abdullah becomes more vulnerable to criticism and questioning of, “Why do we have a peace treaty with a government that oppresses Palestinians?” Resistance to normalization of relations with Israel, already very strong, can only intensify.

Kuttab then asked the ultimate question: What does Israel want to do with the Palestinians? The nightmare scenario is that Israel will drive many of them out of the West Bank to the East Bank if it can get away with it, perhaps during a war?

The East Bank, of course, is in Jordan.  If King Abdullah II is forced to take these Palestinians in, war will be the only recourse as Jordan’s economy would implode.

Jordan is mentioned three times in the prophesied Psalm 83 invasion.
