Palm Sunday is the day in which Christians observe the triumphal entry of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, into Jerusalem. Jesus at last allowed the people to openly recognize Him as their King and their awaited Messiah.
Jesus is fulfilling prophecy. The animal on which He rode was the one the kings of Israel rode when they came in peace; and Zechariah’s prophecy had foretold that the coming of Messiah —the long-awaited king of Israel—to the city of Jerusalem, would be on a young donkey, a colt, which had never before been ridden, Mark 11:2.
ZECHARIAH 9:9-11
vs. 9 :“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your King is coming to you;
He is just and having salvation,
Lowly and riding on a donkey,
A colt, the foal of a donkey.
vs. 10: I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim
And the horse from Jerusalem;
The battle bow shall be cut off.
He shall speak peace to the nations;
His dominion shall be ‘from sea to sea,
And from the River to the ends of the earth.’
vs. 11: “As for you also,
Because of the blood of your covenant,
I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit.”
(Verses 9-10) The Messianic King who will come riding on a colt into Jerusalem is not just any kind of king: He is a King of peace. He will not rule through the power of the sword, He is not coming to wage earthly warfare, but to make the chariot and the war horse cease from Jerusalem.
The King that will come riding a colt will also be a universal King; His dominion shall not be just over the people of Israel, but to all the earth.
(Verse 11) The King who rides the colt into Jerusalem will not deliver His people through the shedding of blood in battle, but through the “blood of the covenant,” which will set captives free from the dominion of sin and death.
