JPost: “A major earthquake of magnitude 6.6 struck about 162 km (100 miles) southeast of Malaga, Spain, on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey said.”
AP News: “ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — A magnitude-7.1 quake knocked items off shelves and walls in Alaska early Sunday morning, jolting the nerves of residents in this earthquake-prone region. There were no reports of injuries, but four homes were lost to explosions or fire following the quake. (headline link @ BPTnews.org)
Opinion: This past week two major earthquakes hit, one in Alaska and one in Spain. Since there were no casualties and only minor damage there were no major news articles.
Christians who keep up with Bible prophecy take note of major earthquakes because that is what Jesus told His apostles would be a sign of the end of the age, and that is what makes it difficult to keep up with.
So few people, including Christians, actually believe that there is an end of this age so I decided to look again at an opinion from November 7, 2015 that I wrote in response to a headline “Nearly 600 earthquakes swarm San Ramon”.
“One of our readers asked me if I knew of a study of world history to our present time showing the increase in earthquakes. I responded with data I found in a book titled “20th century Earthquakes; An Urban Legend by Steven A Austin PHD,” back in 2010 while leading my first Prophecy study group’
Dr Austin’s quote. “The 1940’s was decade of the century with the most energetic earthquakes” caught my attention:
Reference: US Geological Survey Statistics
FROM & TO # of Earthquakes (Mag. > 6.99)
1863 to 1900 incl. 12
1901 to 1938 53
1939 to 1976 71
1977 to 2014 144
I have to admit that since then, I became curious about that research and dug a little deeper. I found that Dr. Austin works for Creation Ministries International:
A new paper, dated February 1, 2015 reiterates earlier findings that the 1940s, the decade of Israel’s rebirth, had the highest number of earthquakes 7.0 and above in the 20th century.
“The frequency of this century’s “major” (magnitude 7.0 to 7.9) and “great” (magnitude 8.0 and higher) earthquakes is summarized in figure 1. The figure shows the frequency of the biggest earthquakes (magnitude 7.0 and higher) by year from 1900 to 1996. A total of 1,943 events are reported, an average of 20 big events per year. Of the 20 events, an average of one per year is a “great” earthquake and average of 19 per year are “major” earthquakes.”
Luke 21:11: “There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.”
