YNet News: “UNITED NATIONS – The United Nations Security Council on Tuesday voiced alarm over Israeli cities and towns about the Golan Heights on Syria’s border with Israel, adding that its status remains unchanged.
“Council members expressed their deep concern over recent Israeli statements about the Golan, and stressed that the status of the Golan remains unchanged,” China’s UN Ambassador Liu Jieyi, president of the 15-nation Security Council this month, told reporters after a closed-door meeting.
He added that council resolution 497 of 1981 made clear that Israel’s decision at the time to impose its laws, jurisdiction and administration in the Golan was “null and void and without international legal effect.”
Opinion: Last Friday, we reported on a Security Council vote Mahmoud Abbas was planning to present to the council at the signing of the UN climate agreement. The vote would call for Israel to recognize a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, and to cease all settlement activity in Jerusalem.
The draft resolution dated March 30, 2016, is published online.
That the UN Security Council maintained a hard line against Israel on the Golan Heights may give Abbas the impetus he is looking for.
The vote could emerge at any time and the deciding vote will likely come down to the United States.
