For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value. It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God. God chose him as your ransom long before the world began, but now in these last days he has been revealed for your sake. Through Christ you have come to trust in God. And you have placed your faith and hope in God because he raised Christ from the dead and gave him great glory. You were cleansed from your sins when you obeyed the truth, so now you must show sincere love to each other as brothers and sisters. Love each other deeply with all your heart. (1 Peter 1:18–22)
We see in Scripture the pattern which God has set.
In Genesis 2:16-17, God’s first command to man had to be obeyed, or the consequence would be death. We know that when the first humans disobeyed God’s command, they immediately died spiritually, and eventually, physically, as well.
God determined blood (death) to be that which atones for sin. The wages of sin is death (Rom. 6:23), therefore death (the sacrifice of life) is the atonement for sin, the pattern of atonement. The Bible says that the remission of sin is based on the shedding of blood (Mat. 26:28). God promised to send a Redeemer to remedy our position of death and bring us into a right-standing (righteousness) with God. That promise was given in Genesis 3:15, the Seed would bruise (destroy) the serpent’s head.
And so, Jesus Christ shed His blood on our behalf that God might be satisfied as He paid the price for our sin; and we, by faith in Him, find that sacrifice covers our sin.
