Violating the nuke deal, Iran shows it wants to talk to Biden

Times of Israel: Iran announced last week that it would be taking steps toward producing uranium metal, in direct violation of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action nuclear agreement.

The revelation came only days after Tehran resumed enriching uranium to 20 percent purity at the underground Fordo facility. According to the JCPOA, Iran can enrich uranium only up to 3.67% until 2030.

Iran’s deliberate breaches of the agreement have rightly caused decision-makers in Israel and the six world powers known as the P5+1 to take notice.

“The production of uranium metal has potentially grave military implications,” said the foreign ministers of Britain, France and Germany, the so-called E3, in a joint statement. “Iran and — I say this clearly — is in the process of acquiring nuclear [weapons] capacity,” added France’s Foreign Minister Jean Yves Le Drian on Saturday. China Ties Raise Questions for Biden’s Pick for Top Defense Post

Joe Biden’s pick for a top Pentagon post works at a research center partnered with China’s Peking University, a school that has long been eyed as a security risk by western intelligence.

Colin Kahl, whom Biden tapped for undersecretary of defense for policy, has served as a senior fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University since the beginning of 2018. The institute oversees the Stanford Center at Peking University in northern Beijing, which opened in 2012.

Peking University, which is run by former Beijing spy chief Qiu Shuiping and has been linked to multiple espionage cases in the United States, recently updated its charter to require loyalty to the Chinese Communist Party, according to an NPR report. The school has also been ramping up its student and faculty surveillance system in what China watchers see as part of the government’s broader crackdown on independent scholarship.

Kahl is not the first Biden nominee whose employer has business entanglements in China. Biden’s pick for secretary of state, Antony Blinken, cofounded the consulting firm WestExec, which helped U.S. universities raise money from China without running afoul of Pentagon grant requirements, the Washington Free Beacon reported last month. WestExec scrubbed the details of this work from its website over the summer.

After Trump’s Departure, China’s Economy Will Lead The World

The pandemic? Which pandemic?

If 2021 unfolds as economists predict, China will have weathered the crisis smoothly. Its gross domestic product is expected to reach, at the end of the year, the level that Western analysts had anticipated in their forecasts drawn up at the end of 2019, before the start of Covid-19. With one difference, however: instead of having experienced, in 2020 and 2021, two years marked by a growth of 5 percent [each], the Asian giant should record an increase in GDP of about 2 percent in 2020, but followed by a rebound, an exceptional 8 percent”. These are the first lines of an article by Le Monde.

No other G20 country will do so well. More than ever, China is the engine of the global economy. In the next few years, China will thus pass from the status of a developing country to a developed country. China’s GDP will reach that of the United States by 2028.

Last November, while in the West there was only talk of Covid (Trump’s “Covid Covid Covid”), China gathered fifteen economies in Asia-Pacific for the largest free trade pact in the world that excludes United States. It represents 30 percent of the world economy.

In foreign policy, 2020 was an extraordinary year for the Chinese Communist Party. Epicenter of the pandemic, Beijing has successfully censored and covered up the origins of the virus and its very serious responsibilities in managing the epidemic.

Report: Joe Biden to Cancel Keystone XL Pipeline Permit on Day One

Breitbart: President-elect Joe Biden plans to cancel the permit for the Keystone XL pipeline on his first day in office, according to several news sources.

The decision delighted advocates of the so-called “Green New Deal,” but will disappoint Biden’s own political allies in the trade union movement, who had backed the pipeline for the thousands of jobs it would create. Read More

@BernieSanders

The Keystone pipeline is & always has been a disaster. I’m delighted that Joe Biden will cancel the Keystone permit on his first day in office. With all of the major crises facing America, we must never lose sight of the most existential threat facing our planet: climate change.

Israel Goes Back To The Future

JNS: In an interview with The New York Times last month, President-elect Joe Biden restated his intention to return to the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran. Israel opposes this plan because the 2015 deal ensures Iran will become a nuclear-armed state.

Media reports over the past few weeks have detailed some of Israel’s plans to convince the incoming administration to reconsider its position. Among other things, the government intends to use documents from Iran’s nuclear archive, that Mossad agents spirited out of Tehran in 2018, to show Biden and his advisers that the 2015 deal was based on the incorrect assumption that Iran’s nuclear program was defensive and civilian.

The archive proves incontrovertibly that Iran’s nuclear program was conceived with the aim of and has always been about making nuclear bombs, not medical isotopes, and that the purpose of that nuclear arsenal is not to defend against its enemies, but to obliterate them.

Although Israel’s case is rock solid, it is unlikely to convince the Biden team to change course. Read More

Biden: Day One Legislation To offer Legal Status To 11 Million Immigrants

LA Times: During his first days in office, President-elect Joe Biden plans to send a groundbreaking legislative package to Congress to address the long-elusive goal of immigration reform, including what’s certain to be a controversial centerpiece: a pathway to citizenship for an estimated 11 million immigrants who are in the country without legal status, according to immigrant rights activists in communication with the Biden-Harris transition team.

People in masks hold hand-painted signs with messages in support of immigrants.

The bill also would provide a shorter pathway to citizenship for hundreds of thousands of people with temporary protected status and beneficiaries of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals who were brought to the U.S. as children, and probably also for certain front-line essential workers, vast numbers of whom are immigrants.

In a significant departure from many previous immigration bills passed under both Democratic and Republican administrations, the proposed legislation would not contain any provisions directly linking an expansion of immigration with stepped-up enforcement and security measures, said Marielena Hincapié, executive director of the National Immigration Law Center and its Immigrant Justice Fund, who has been consulted on the proposal by Biden staffers. Will COVID Numbers Now Shift for Biden’s Benefit?

American Thinker, Brian C. Joondeph, M.D: Any bets that once Biden is ensconced in the Oval Office these test criteria are suddenly deemed overly sensitive and revised, miraculously reducing the case counts which are breathlessly reported daily on cable news? All of a sudden, COVID will be going away, only because the Orange Man is out of the White House and Brilliant Biden is now in charge, with no mention of the rule change.

Deborah Birx, AIDS researcher, takes a prominent role in coronavirus messaging for Trump administration - Los Angeles Times

Will COVID death criteria change in a similar manner? I predict they will. Early in the pandemic, Dr. Deborah Birx acknowledged that there was no distinction made between death with COVID versus death from COVID.

So, I think in this country we’ve taken a very liberal approach to mortality. There are other countries that if you had a preexisting condition and let’s say the virus caused you to go to the ICU and then have a heart or kidney problem some countries are recording as a heart issue or a kidney issue and not a COVID-19 death. Right now…if someone dies with COVID-19 we are counting that as a COVID-19 death.

How soon until the CDC suddenly realizes the distinction and starts reporting deaths more realistically, as other countries do? Again this will support the narrative that all the 2020 COVID deaths were due to President Trump and it took a change of presidential leadership to miraculously reverse the death toll. Read More

Trump orders US military’s Central Command to include State of Israel

Jewish News Service: U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees the mission of the U.S. military in the Middle East, to include Israel, reported The Wall Street Journal on Thursday, citing U.S. officials.

Until now, Israel had been part of the U.S. European Command for the sake of America’s Arab allies that have had adversarial relationships with the Jewish state.

The development of the Abraham Accords—in which CENTCOM members the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain normalized relations with Israel—has allowed for pro-Israel groups to make the case that the time is ripe for Israel to fall under CENTCOM as well. (Sudan and Morocco, the other more recent signees of the Abraham Accords, are not part of CENTCOM, as Sudan does not have military cooperation with the United States and Morocco is part of the U.S. Africa Command.)

One of the pro-Israel groups to advocate for the move was the Jewish Institute for National Security of America (JINSA), whose president and CEO, Michael Makovsky, said that the realignment “will strengthen strategic planning, defense cooperation and deterrence against Iran by America and its regional allies.” Read More

Goldman Pours Cold Water On Biden’s Fiscal Plan, Sees Just $1.1 Trillion Enacted

Zero Hedge: Last night, in our post-mortem of Biden’s hyperambitious $1.9 trillion stimulus plan we warned that “the bigger size, and inclusion of Democratic priorities such as a minimum-wage hike, also means that it will be next to impossible for Republicans to vote for Biden’s proposal.” Additionally, we said that “there is a distinct risk that the recent market euphoria will fade soon once traders realize, that Bide’s use of the phrases “paying their fair share” and “closing loopholes” could spark a tax-hike driven selloff since the stimulus boost is already fully priced in.”

We echoed this warning this morning, when we said that equities are hit “as attention turned to how much of the package will ultimately get passed by Congress, with the go-big price tag and the inclusion of proposals set to be opposed by many Republicans.”

And judging by the market’s reaction, traders are finally paying attention, and with good reason: according to Goldman, which just last week said it expects a $750BN stimulus to pass in the aftermath of the Democrats’ blue sweep after their victory in the Georgia runoff, overnight hiked its assumption for how much stimulus will ultimately pass.

And therein lies the problem, because at a revised $1.1 trillion, Goldman estimate of a realistic stimulus, is just 60% of the number proposed by Biden. Read More
