Rabbi of 8,000 stranded Ethiopian Jews fights to complete their exodus

Jerusalem On Line: When about 100 Ethiopian immigrants left for Israel last month, Menachem Waldman was there to see them off at the Addis Ababa airport. For the 64-year-old Israeli rabbi making his 70th trip to Ethiopia, it was one more small victory in a bitter battle that has caused enormous pain and agony for tens of thousands of families that have been torn apart.

And it is a battle that is far from over: About 8,000 Ethiopians remain waiting in Ethiopia for the Israeli government to allow them to immigrate. Many have been separated from their families in Israel for more than 20 years.

Waldman’s interest in Ethiopian Jews goes back to the early 1980s, when the first wave of Ethiopian Jews came to Israel and a group settled near the village of Nir Etzion in northern Israel. Waldman served as the local rabbi there. more …

Opinion: We have bee reporting on the aliyah of the Ethiopian Jews to Israel since October 29, 2012:

“For then I will restore to the peoples a pure language, That they all may call on the name of the Lord, To serve Him with one accord. From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia My worshipers, The daughter of My dispersed ones, Shall bring My offering” Zephaniah 3:10.

Since then I have used Zephaniah 3:10 many times as an example of how prophecy is being fulfilled in our times (mostly to blank stares).

I usually then share Ezekiel 34:11-13:

‘For thus says the Lord God: “Indeed I Myself will search for My sheep and seek them out. As a shepherd seeks out his flock on the day he is among his scattered sheep, so will I seek out My sheep and deliver them from all the places where they were scattered on a cloudy and dark day. And I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them to their own land; I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, in the valleys and in all the inhabited places of the country.”

If still no response, I dive into three reasons God is calling the Jews back to the land:

  • Ethiopia is one of the Gog Magog Cush nations that God will judge (Ezekiel 39:6 NIV)
  • The descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob will be called back to Israel just prior to the time of Jacob’s trouble (Jeremiah 30:7; Ezekiel 39:28)
  • Matthew 24:15-16 God tells His chosen that when the abomination of desolation (Antichrist stands in the 3rd temple and demands worship) takes place, the Jews are to flee to the mountains for protection and salvation:

“And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for hisonly son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn” Zechariah 12:10

Oh well, I will keep on trying.

  1. I still think that the ark of the covenant is in Ethiopia. So when another temple is built, then the Ethiopian congregation will need to deliver it to Israel.
