Tisha B’av (the 9th of Av) is one of the most solemn, mournful, fast days on the Jewish calendar.  It marks the destruction of the first and second Temples, yet the place upon which they will be rebuilt remains holy.

It was also the day of the 10 spies’ evil report concerning the Promised Land, as well as many other calamities that have befallen the Jewish people.

The day of destruction, the 9th of Av, is the saddest of days, but not forever. God promised through the words of His Prophet Zechariah that one day this very fast would become a cheerful feast for the Jewish people: “Thus says the LORD of hosts: “The fasts…shall be joy and gladness and cheerful feasts for the house of Judah.” Zechariah 8 goes on to say that when this occurs: “…many peoples and strong nations shall come to seek the LORD of hosts in Jerusalem, and to pray before the LORD.”
