Qaddafi’s Son Is Alive. And He Wants to Take Libya Back.

It would also be welcomed at the Kremlin, which has bolstered strongmen across the Middle East and remains an important military player in Libya, with its own soldiers and about 2,000 mercenaries still on the ground. “The Russians think Seif could win,” a European diplomat with long experience in Libya told me. Seif appears to have other foreign backers; he was cagey with me on that front. Libya has been a proxy battleground in recent years for a number of foreign powers, including Egypt, Russia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates. But it is hard to know how much influence they might have on an election. For the United States, which led the NATO campaign that helped oust Seif’s father, the revival of the Qaddafi dynasty would be an embarrassment at the very least.

Seif also faces a serious obstacle from abroad: He is wanted for crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court, based on his role in the 2011 crackdown. He was tried in a separate proceeding in Tripoli in 2015, making appearances by video link from a cage in Zintan, and was convicted and sentenced to death by firing squad. (He is entitled to an appeal under Libyan law.) Seif told me he was confident that these legal issues could be negotiated away if a majority of the Libyan people choose him as their leader.

One of Seif ’s political advantages is his name. Another is the peculiar fact that Muammar el-Qaddafi’s son — the same man who promised “rivers of blood” in a 2011 speech — is now seen by many as the presidential candidate with the cleanest hands. Read More

D.C. Mayor Defends Herself After Blatantly Ignoring Own Mask Mandate

Daily Wire: D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser defended herself after photos and videos showed her officiating a wedding the same day her indoor mask mandate went into effect.

The wedding itself appears to have been outside, but the reception appears to have been indoors, where photos and videos of Bowser indoors without a mask were published by The Washington Examiner.

“Bowser, who was not sitting at the table designated for her during wedding toasts, did not wear a mask despite not actively eating or drinking. When approached by the Washington Examiner to explain why she was maskless at an event now legally obligated to enforce mask compliance, security blockaded the free press,” the outlet reported.

Taliban Kidnapped Navy Vet in Afghanistan. Biden Admin Risks Leaving Him Behind

Free Beacon: The Biden administration’s full withdrawal from Afghanistan could leave behind a U.S. Navy veteran kidnapped by the Taliban.

Haqqani network operatives backed by the Taliban abducted Mark Frerichs, a civilian contractor in Afghanistan for the U.S. government, in January 2020. The government has made little progress in retrieving the Navy veteran. U.S. authorities have been able to establish that Frerichs is alive, but have yet to disclose his whereabouts.

The State Department has briefed lawmakers in recent weeks, but according to Rep. Mike Waltz (R., Fla.), a former Green Beret in Afghanistan and lead advocate for bringing Frerichs home, the Biden administration’s opacity has hindered the urgent recovery operation.

“I am incredibly frustrated by their lack of responsiveness and lack of answers,” Waltz told the Washington Free Beacon. “The question is: What’s the plan now?”

The United States faces dwindling leverage over the Taliban amid a public deadline for withdrawal. As the Biden administration completes a full evacuation of military forces from Afghanistan, the Taliban are waging a violent offensive across the country, effectively squeezing the Afghan government—which receives backing from the United States—out of power. President Joe Biden conceded in a July speech that the Taliban are at their strongest since 2001, and analysis from the Foundation for Defense of Democracies shows the terrorists took control of some 139 districts in the country in two months. American nationals are not the sole focus of the pull-out. The State Department is scrambling to evacuate Afghan translators from the country as the Taliban steamroll through local security forces.

Zero Hedge: Amid all the talk of global warming, climate change-induced catastrophes, decarbonization and green finance, the global trade in “dirty” coal is enjoying an ironic renaissance. Bulk ships are busy transporting coal to Asia — and to eco-conscious Europe — boosting freight income for some of the very shipowners who publicly tout their environmental bona fides to investors.

“Turns out the news of the demise of coal has been greatly exaggerated,” said Stifel analyst Ben Nolan in a new client note. “Despite an unseemly carbon footprint, coal demand is actually accelerating this year.”

Coal is transported aboard larger bulkers known as Capesizes (ships with a capacity of around 180,000 deadweight tons or DWT), as well as on sub-Cape vessels such as Panamaxes (65,000-90,000 DWT) and Supramaxes (45,000-60,000 DWT).

Israel 35: The Nation of Islam movement, headed byhas been explicitly anti-Semitic but this has never stopped Twitter from carrying their Jew-hatred into the world. But last week, the social media platform suspended their account (@OfficialNOI), not for comparing Jews to insects or calling for the destruction of Israel (as Farrakhan has done in the past).

The suspension came after the organization criticized mRNA vaccines. Farrakhan was warned in March that a video of his annual Savior’s Day speech violated their rules on spreading “misinformation” about the vaccine. In the video, Farrakhan referred to the vaccine as a “vial of death”, comparing it to the poison-laced Kool-Aid used by the infamous “People’s Temple” cult of the 1970s.

Farrakhan was warned that such statements could lead to the account being suspended but he persisted.

US blasts Iran for attack on Israeli-managed oil tanker

Arutz Sheva: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken accused Iran of attacking an Israeli-managed ship in the Arabian Sea last Friday, rejecting Iranian claims it was not responsible for the incident.

In a statement issued Sunday evening, Blinken said the US is “confident” that the drone attack which killed two crew members on the MV Mercer Street was carried out by Iran.

Blinken condemned Tehran for the attack, and vowed an “appropriate response” for the attack, to be made in conjunction with America’s allies.

Fed’s Lowest Lowball Inflation Measure “Core PCE” Spikes Further. Highest 3-Month Rate since 1982

Wolf Street: As push came to shove toward the end of the FOMC press conference on Wednesday, Fed Chair Jerome Powell, fidgeting on the hotseat of inflation and struggling with “transitory” and “temporary,” admitted that the recent rate of inflation was “not moderately above” the Fed’s inflation target but “way above target.” Today, the inflation measure that the Fed uses for this inflation target, annual “core PCE,” spiked further.

The Fed uses the “core PCE” inflation measure because it is the lowest lowball inflation measure that the US government provides. It excludes food and energy, which can be volatile, and it is structured differently than the Consumer Price Index, and it is nearly always below “core CPI.”

This Personal Consumption Expenditures price index without food and energy jumped by 0.45% in June, from May, after having jumped by 0.5% in May, 0.7% in April, and 0.4% in March, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis today.
